Archaeology

Archaeology About the Field Archaeology is the study of the human past through the physical things people left behind. These include pottery, beads, tools, coins, burnt seeds, house foundations, walls, and even marks in the soil where a wooden post once stood. Most people who ever lived left no written record, and archaeology helps us learn about their lives from what remains. India has a very long human history. Stone tools found at Attirampakkam in Tamil Nadu have been dated to about 1.5 million years ago, while written records cover only a small part of that time. Harappan cities, megalithic burials in South India, Buddhist monasteries, temple towns, forts, stepwells, colonial buildings and ordinary villages are all sources of archaeological evidence. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protects 3,685 monuments and sites of national importance, and many more sites are protected by state governments. Archaeologists do much more than dig. They survey land on foot and with satellite images, record monuments, study pottery and stone tools, examine ancient plant and animal remains, read inscriptions, run scientific tests such as dating and DNA analysis, maintain site records, write reports, help conserve old structures and plan museum displays. Excavation usually takes up only part of the year, and the rest is spent in labs, libraries, museums and offices. Archaeology also has a legal and public side. Ancient monuments and sites in India are protected by law, and archaeologists help decide what is protected, what is excavated and how sites are managed. Along with research, the field includes heritage management, conservation, museums, tourism and documentation work. Top Qualities Required for a Career in Archaeology Archaeology needs both the patience of a researcher and the stamina for outdoor fieldwork. These qualities help the most: Patience: Excavation is slow, and reports on finds such as pottery can take months to complete. Results rarely come quickly. Careful Observation: The difference between two layers of soil may be only a slight change in colour or texture. Missing it can lead to a wrong reading of the site. Good Record-Keeping: Once a layer is excavated, it is gone. Your notes, drawings, photographs and measurements become the only record, so they must be accurate. Physical Fitness: Fieldwork means heat, dust, long days, basic living conditions and remote locations. Interest in Science: Modern archaeology uses dating methods, soil chemistry, isotope analysis and statistics. You do not need a science background to start, but you should be willing to learn. Language Skills: Knowing languages such as Sanskrit, Prakrit, Persian, Tamil or other regional languages can help, depending on the period you study. Writing Skills: Archaeological work has to be written up and published. Reports, site records and research papers are a large part of the job. Respect for Local Communities: Many sites are in places where people live and have their own links to the site. Working well with them is part of the job. Persistence: Permanent posts are few and fieldwork depends on funding, so you will need to keep applying for jobs, projects and grants. Top Jobs and Careers in Archaeology Archaeology graduates work in government archaeology departments, universities, museums, heritage consultancy, conservation, tourism and digital documentation. Here are the main roles: Job Role What They Do Avg. Salary Range In India (Junior to Senior level) Global Avg. Slow Publication: Results can take years to be published. Paperwork and Approvals: Permits, rules for protected sites and approvals from different bodies affect what work you can do. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Do I need to be a history student to study archaeology? Not always. Studying history in school helps, but it is not always required. Eligibility for BA and MA programmes varies between universities, and some MA courses ask for a background in history or archaeology, so check each university's rules. Science graduates can also enter the field through archaeological science. Can I become an archaeologist with only a BA? It is difficult. Most archaeologist posts in India, including government jobs, ask for a master's degree. With a BA, you may find assistant, documentation or museum support roles, but more options open up after an MA. How do I get fieldwork experience as a student? Start with your own department. You can also write to university archaeology departments and ASI circle offices before the field season, which usually begins around November. Many excavations accept student volunteers, and even a few weeks on site will strengthen your application. What does the ASI PG Diploma in Archaeology offer? It is the ASI's professional training course in field archaeology. It covers excavation methods, surveying, conservation, epigraphy and documentation, with practical training in the field. You take it after a master's degree. With only 15 seats, admission is competitive. Is there work outside the government? Yes. Heritage consultancies, conservation firms, museums, trusts such as INTACH, tourism bodies and 3D documentation projects all hire archaeology graduates. Should I study archaeology abroad? Studying abroad is expensive, so it is best done for a clear reason, such as training in a specialised area like archaeological science or dating methods. For the archaeology of India, Indian institutes give you direct access to sites, collections and local research networks at a much lower cost.
